Arai Mitsuki (新井 美月) is a ghoul who works as a librarian in the 20th ward. Her best friend is a human, Moriyama Ema who knows her secret for many years but accepted her as a ghoul. Ema helps her a lot to learn more about humans and to be able to understand them better. Thanks to her, Mitsuki is much more informed about humans than ghouls usually are. 
Despite the fact that she looks very serious, she's very kind and caring towards everybody she loves and towards kids. She likes living and acting as a human but she's very mistrustful and careful with unfamiliar people. If she doesn't trust someone at first sight, she always uses a fake name and fake datas about herself. 
Her fiancé is a ghoul, Imai Satoru and they live together. 

At first people often think she's a very serious girl but it's not true. She's usually quiet but kind, caring, basically easy-going and she has sense of humour. She just likes avoiding unnecessary talking with people who she doesn't know.
She's distrustful with unfamiliar people and a little unsocial. She has very good divinations and she always listens to them. When she meets with new people and she feel like she can't trust them or she won't talk with them too much in the future then she always uses a fake name. But if she feels like they aren't bad, she slowly starts talking more and more. She's very careful and never talks about herself or her life. She always says only as much about herself as needed and never more. Also she has a weird habit what is that she usually doesn't use her friends’ names when she talks about them for someone who doesn't know them. She talks about them only as "he", "she", "my brother", "my boyfriend", "my friend" or "the guy/girl who I mentioned yesterday". 

She’s a realist and she lives in the real life. She’s not a pessimist but not an optimist either – she always tries to see both sides of the things. She’s searching for the logical things if something happens.
She’s secretive, both with her friends’ and with her own things, she's the type who never talks about others' secrets. She always wants to solve her problems alone and doesn’t like to ask other’s help which causes her a lot of problem.  She’s very loyal and supportive with people she loves and she would never betray them. She's reliable and responsible, if she promises something then she tries to keep it nevermind what the cost is. She's smart and always uses her brain before doing something; she's more like brave than reckless. But one of her bad habits is that she tends to think too much and overthink the things. She always tries to come up with as many ideas as she can and after a certain time she already has so many things in her mind that it’s difficult for her to concentrate and she becomes slower.

She always worries more for her friends than for herself. She doesn't want to throw away her life but she would be able to do it if that's the only way to save her friends. She is very honest with her friends, sometimes as much that it already sounds rude. But with other people who she doesn't know she tends to lie a lot and isn't honest. She’s selfish and passive and she often says she doesn't care for the world. She wants to protect only her own little world what means the happiness to her, and the others should protect themselves.

She’s ambitious also confident in her skills and she knows where her limit is. If it’s a fight then she doesn’t feel bad for escaping if she knows she can’t win.
She is a perfectionist too and if she does something, she wants to do it as good as she can. Because of it she tends to become annoyed if she tries to do something but it never looks like she wants it to be. She’s very stubborn and it’s difficult to change her opinion which sometimes causes her some problems.
Basically she’s very patient and it’s difficult  to make her really angry. She usually can deal with her friends’ stupid things.
Mitsuki has a sly and observant side too. She learned how to read in people's reactions and she acts according to her experiences. She always tries to avoid the arguments.

She never uses violence without any reason - but if they piss her off or she needs to protect herself she can be harsh and cruel. She rarely becomes agressive but if someone pisses her off she always uses her full strength in the fight. Also since her childhood she tends to become very sadistic towards people whom insulting her or her friends. 
She’s bad at teamwork with unfamiliar people and she likes doing everything alone. There is only some people who she can work in a team well, like Satoru or her brother, Hikaru. She hasn’t got any sense for being a leader and she doesn’t even try to do that. She always needs someone who’s the leader who she can rely on - in her everyday life too. She’s a little inflexible and she can't get used to new things within some days. 

Also she has a very cute side too. Despite her clothing style she really likes cute things such as animals, plushies, jewelries, keyrings, etc. If she sees one of these, she immediately stops and looks at them - sometimes she even blushes. But if someone notices her when she's doing this she just starts acting like nothing happened and she tries to keep her "cool attitude".

Hikaru is Mitsuki's older brother and the last person who's alive of her family members. They walk on totally different paths since their childhood but their relationship isn't bad because of this. Hikaru has a cold and very serious attitude but he's really caring towards her little sister. He accepted the way how Mitsuki lives her life and she accepted her brother's lifestyle too. They have full respect towards each other and it's very rare if they try to get involved with each other’s problems. They usually meet twice a month - but the truth is that Hikaru often goes to check her to be sure she's alright, even if he doesn't talk with her. Although Hikaru almost never says this, he's really worries about Mitsuki, mostly because her best friend is a human. He doesn't really trust Ema but he never hurts her because he knows how important she is for Mitsuki. Basically they are very good siblings and they deeply care for each other. In fact, Hikaru's goal in his life to take revenge on their parents’ death and close their past with that because he believes that Mitsuki can start a new life.

 Moriyama Ema
Ema is Mitsuki’s best friend and a human. They met at first when Mitsuki was 14 years old and their friendship became even stronger and stronger as time went on. After Mitsuki saved her from a ghoul when she was 18 years old she thought their friendship will end and she will be reported to the CCG. But instead of this in next morning Ema appeared in her house like nothing happened and asked her to go with her to buy some new clothes. Ema says she was very surprised when Mitsuki saved her and she realized that her best friend is a ghoul. But at the same time she had already known her for 4 years and she knew that Mitsuki wasn't a bad person and she never would hurt her or her family.  
According to Mitsuki, Ema is crazy because she is able to accept her like this, moreover, she even tends to make fun of it - but that's why she's so important to her. Mitsuki really cares for Ema and truly trust her and this feeling is mutual. Ema says she would never betray Mitsuki, not even if she died because of that. Ema tries to help Mitsuki and to teach her how to act like a normal human. She goes shopping with her; moreover, she even started teaching Mitsuki how to cook despite Mitsuki never will be able to eat it. Ema says never mind that she can eat it or not but one day she really would like to eat a good food what Mitsuki made for her. She often talks to her about the taste of food too, in order to being able to act more like a human. 
Ema has a weird opinion about ghouls; she says that of course she's afraid of them a little but because of Mitsuki and her friends she knows that not everyone is bad - same as the humans. She said if she would choose that who should die: a human who killed many people for fun or a ghoul who killed many people because it's the only way to live then she would choose the human's death without hesitation.
Also she tends to tease Mitsuki a lot especially with her breasts size and often touches her breasts in order to annoy her a little with it. Moreover, she recommends erotic novels for her. Ema is writing a novel and she wants Mitsuki to be the first who will read it.

Mitsuki is in a very good relationship with Ema's parents and sister. They don't know anything about Mitsuki's real life and in order to avoid the problems Mitsuki meets with them only four times in a month. They really like Mitsuki, as she would be someone from their family. She calls Ema's mother as Okaa-san and her father as Otoo-san. Sometimes Mitsuki spends the weekends at Ema's house and she helps them to cook and goes with them to different places. Ema's parents really like Satoru (especially Ema's mother) and often say to Mitsuki that next time she should come together with him to visit them. In fact they are afraid of ghouls and often say to Mitsuki that she should take care of herself and avoid them as much as she can. Mitsuki always feel bad because of this and she said she would never let them know her true side.
